Dental implant surgery can only take place with an open gap and healthy bone and gums, so you may need to take several steps prior to receiving the surgery. These include:
- Tooth extraction, if the tooth cannot be saved
- Healing of the extraction site
- Bone graft
- Healing of the jawbone
Each case is unique, and you may not require prior treatment to receive the dental implant, but this will only be confirmed after your consult. Once complete, your surgery can be scheduled.
Dental implant surgery
Dental implant surgery is a slightly more complicated procedure that requires several steps and specialists to complete. However, you are in extremely capable care with Dr Engelbrecht. During the procedure, you will be sedated for a pain-free and comfortable experience. Then, the surgeon will make a small incision into the gum to expose the jawbone. Next, the titanium post is inserted into the jaw to mimic a natural tooth root.
If you are receiving an abutment at the same time, this will be placed on top of the implant and fitted with a temporary crown or partial denture while it heals. The implant must completely fuse with the jawbone and heal before your permanent restoration can be placed. This can take several months.
If you do not receive the abutment, this will require a minor procedure before placing the permanent crown or bridge. Your final appointment will be the fitting of the ceramic crown or bridge. Using a digital impression of your teeth, we create a permanent restoration that matches in colour and shape. Dr Engelbrecht will do a final assessment of your crown and implant and advise on best practices and what to avoid.
